The University of Waterloo Act encompasses all of the duties and responsibilities that the University has with respect to its members and students. The core mission I identified regarded the objects of the University, which encapsulates “…the pursuit of learning through scholarship, teaching and research within a spirit of free inquiry and expression” (The University of Waterloo Act, 1972). I believe this accurately represents the core mission as it shows what the University cares about and prioritizes. The focus on learning is one of the most important points a university should stand behind, as it shows care towards its student body as well as innovation and progress. I have found the core mission to be well-aligned with my previously held beliefs, including the focus on learning and on having an organized structure to benefit the students as well as staff members. The emphasis on free inquiry and expression also appealed to me as it connects with Rauch’s ideals of Liberal Science. I believe that any university that prioritizes the freedom of inquiry and expression has a major advantage by increasing creativity and innovation while decreasing discrimination amongst its members.

Rauch’s Kindly Inquisitors portrays the benefits of Liberal Inquiry under various perspectives, comparing its ideology and morals with other alternatives such as Egalitarianism…
